If the filesystem is recognized, or the video codecs are recognized, you should get videos with timestamps, channel numbers, and dates. From there, you'll have to wait as it scans the drive and begins loading videos. One of them should allow you to point to the COPY drive. Open the toolbox, and find the playback tool, or backup tool. In fact, this is a best practice, so do it anyways if you can. If this if for court, you need to write block it and DD onto a clean drive. But overall, you'll want to do the following: Checking the first few sectors on the drive should tell you exactly what the file system is, and determines how to proceed. Basically, these things are all made overseas and, from my experience, use one of the two main filesystems. If it's a DVR hard drive, then it's likely a DHFS, or DDFS (I think? Something like a proprietary version of ext3?).
Therefore, I found another route to recovering DVR videos. I'm sure it's fine software and does fine work, but it is out of my budget.

Searching online I also found other software like DVR Examiner but again not free! HX-Recovery and Defraser both support WFS from my understanding but the charge for licenses.Įither way, this was a fun and educational trip for me! I want to thank you all for your time! Using DVR Examiner I manage to load the E01 file and found more than 3000 files! Filesystem of the device was WFS and output h264. Also PhotoRec suggested by 4n6sicator didn't work as well (couldn't find any useful files in my case). I tried to use Byte4Bytes suggestion below however it didn't work for me. I choose the live cd option since I didn't have any write blocking devices. I manage and create and E01 image as well as a dd copy of the drive using PALADIN's live cd. Several times in the past I used EaseUS Data Recovery but I was wondering if there is a better way for data recovery. What's the best way to recover data from a hard drive? I need to try and recover data from a dvr hard drive.
